Today we’re going to talk about the immune benefits of vitamin C. Vitamin C does a lot of different things for your health, but it’s immune benefits are really amazing.

Vitamin C deficiencies are actually a very common problem. You can have what’s called a subclinical vitamin C deficiency, where you’re not completely deficient, but you’re deficient enough to have a weakened immune system. Vitamin C is a water-soluble nutrient. This means that unless you’re constantly getting vitamin C, you could become deficient very quickly.

Vitamin C is a very powerful antioxidant. Free-radicals can damage certain things in the body. Vitamin C can help counter free-radical damage.

Immune benefits of vitamin C:

1. Enhanced antibodies
2. Increased neutrophil motility
3. Enhanced B-cells (increases antibodies)
4. Enhanced T-cells (helps fight pathogens)

A vitamin C deficiency can make you more susceptible to certain infections. If you’re very deficient in vitamin C, you can develop scurvy. Scurvy can increase susceptibility to fatal infections like pneumonia. Scurvy is often followed by infectious epidemics because infections increase the need for vitamin C. If you’re using your immune system more, you can deplete your vitamin C reserves.

Causes of a vitamin C deficiency:

1. Not getting enough vitamin C from the diet
2. An infection that puts stress on the immune system

How much vitamin C do you need?

• You need at least 200mg of vitamin C per day.

Foods high in vitamin C are:

• Sauerkraut
• Leafy greens
• Bell peppers
• Hot peppers

If you’re going to take vitamin C supplements, make sure that you take a whole-food-based complex vitamin C supplement, not a synthetic vitamin C supplement.

  1. What do you think about camu camu powder?

  2. What's the Max a person can take a day for lowering uric acid levels ?

  3. fall is coming and so flu viruses (corona). it worries me. I read that in case of sickness one needs 1000 mg to 2000 mg of vitamine C a day. what would you advise to take/eat to reach that quantity?

  4. I have been recommended a vitamin C supplement labeled triple vitamin C by Eladiet. Described as “coated” vitamin C it is made up of acerola extract (malpighia glabra L and “vitamin C” + liposomal vitamin C (phosphatidicoline complex, palmitic acid and oleic acid). 500 mg per capsule.Would love to see a video looking into the true origins/how liposome / coated vitamin C is produced. These guys state it is “natural” although the natural part is just an extract of acerola… and the label seems to suggest it makes up 50% but I think it’s deliberately misleading as it’s all bunched up together on the label description. Any one else come across this?

  5. hi doc. can we take vitamin c via enema method?

  6. Another good source of Vitamin C is orange juice I believe. If you drink a good glass or cup of orange juice a day you will better off if you didn't.

  7. I take 10,000 my of vit c a day d 10,000 iu of vit d as well and many other vitamins

  8. could you talk about lemon water Vit C and the the sugar in the lemon v's Vit C uptake?please 🙂

  9. Lol! He has a hard time believing that organic synthesis works! What a scrub…

  10. What do you think of a product called Ester C?

  11. You “have a hard time believing” is not scientific. Please remain professional.

  13. what about liposomal vitamin c

  14. They say vitamin C is a natural antihistamine

  15. How much vit c do i need ?

  16. Dr. Berg, I just found your content and am so pleased. However, I am amazed that your recommendation of only 200mg/day of Vitamin C differs so radically from many of the other health and Vitamin C experts I get information from. Other recommendations include:- Andrew Saul: 5,000-6,000mg/day (over 3 times/day), and much more when sick. He commonly says, “Take enough C to be symptom free, whatever the amount might be- Dr. Llaila Afrika: 5,000mg-10,000mg/day- Linus Pauling – 3,000mg when healthy, 15,000-18,000mg when sick- Dr. Thomas Levy
    : 2,000 – 3,000 mg Vitamin C 3 or 4 times a day- Thomas DeLauer takes over 5,000mg/day 7,000-15,000mg when tired and feeling run-down

  17. “Calling Dr Howard, Dr Fine, Dr Howard!……………………….again!

  18. Dr Berg I am very grateful for your detailed and extremely useful content, but I disagree that ascorbic acid without complex is insufficient. Afaik most mammals produce this very compound directly, so I don't see the reasoning why for us humans we need to take it together with other nutrients in a vit c complex to gain the benefits. Also I have found personally that quantity makes a huge difference, and 200mg is not enough.

  19. Will vit c break your fast

  20. Great thank you Dr. Berg! Where is your other video on vitamin C?

  21. What about ester c? Does it Worth??

  22. When is the best time to take vitamin c? And should it be taken on an empty stomach?? Thank you!!

  23. White Pine Tree Needle oil has natural high vit C
